  • Hire a junior and take bigger projects

Tax: Professional income on presumptive tax

Return: ITR-4 (Sugam) if total income is up to ₹50 lakh; otherwise ITR-3

  • If your work is a notified profession (information technology, technical consultancy, engineering, architecture, interior decoration, film artist, accountancy, legal, medical and a few more), Sec 58 of the Income-tax Act 2025 (old Sec 44ADA) lets you show 50% of receipts as income, for receipts up to ₹50 lakh (₹75 lakh if at least 95% comes in digitally).
  • If your work is not on that list, the business route of Sec 58 (old Sec 44AD) at 6% or 8% may fit instead. A Savvy confirms which one applies to you.
  • Clients may deduct TDS (Sec 393 of the 2025 Act, old Sec 194J). It shows in your AIS and you claim it back in your return.
  • Pay advance tax in one go by 15 March if the year's tax is ₹10,000 or more.

GST for clients abroad

Services to clients outside India, paid in foreign currency, are exports and carry no GST. Below ₹20 lakh you need not register. Once registered, file a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) each year so you can invoice exports without GST.
