Questions
What must a GST tax invoice show?
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists it: your name, address and GSTIN; a serial number of up to 16 characters; the date; the customer's name, address and GSTIN if registered; HSN or SAC code; description, quantity and unit; taxable value after discount; the GST rate and the CGST, SGST or UTGST, IGST and cess amounts; the place of supply; whether reverse charge applies; and your signature. This tool checks each one and tells you what is missing.
When do I charge CGST and SGST, and when IGST?
Compare your registered state with the place of supply. Same state: CGST and SGST (UTGST in Chandigarh, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu), half the rate each. Different state or an export: IGST at the full rate. The tool does this the moment you pick the place of supply.
How many digits of HSN or SAC do I need?
Under Notification 78/2020-Central Tax: if last year's aggregate turnover was up to ₹5 crore, 4 digits on B2B invoices (optional on B2C); above ₹5 crore, 6 digits on every invoice. This has applied since 1 April 2021.
I am a composition dealer. Can I use this?
Yes. Choose Bill of supply. A composition dealer cannot issue a tax invoice or collect GST, and Rule 5(1)(f) needs the words "Composition taxable person, not eligible to collect tax on supplies" at the top. The tool adds them for you. A bill of supply is also what you issue if you sell only exempt goods or services.
I am a freelancer without GST. What invoice do I give?
Choose Invoice (no GST). It carries your name, PAN if you want, your client's details, what you did and the amount, with no tax lines. Once your turnover crosses the registration limit, get registered and switch to Tax invoice.
Do I need an e-invoice?
If your aggregate turnover in any year from 2017-18 crossed ₹5 crore, your B2B tax invoices must be reported on the government's e-invoice portal (IRP) to get an IRN and QR code (Notification 10/2023-Central Tax, from 1 August 2023). Use this tool to prepare the invoice, then report it on the IRP. The tool reminds you when your turnover is in that range.
What is reverse charge on an invoice?
For some supplies, such as legal services by an advocate to a business, the customer pays the GST to the government instead of you. Your invoice still shows the tax and must say that reverse charge applies. Tick Reverse charge and the tool shows the tax but leaves it out of the amount payable to you.
Which GST rate should I pick?
The rate follows your HSN or SAC code. Since 22 September 2025, most goods and services are at 5% or 18%, with 40% for a few items; most things that were at 12% or 28% moved. The 0.25%, 1.5% and 3% rates apply to a few items such as rough diamonds, cut stones and gold. If you are unsure, ask a Savvy before you send the invoice.
What if my customer is not registered and the bill is ₹50,000 or more?
Rule 46(e) then needs their name, address, the delivery address and the state with its code on the invoice. Below ₹50,000 you add these if the customer asks.
Is my data safe?
Your data never leaves your device. The invoice, your logo, signature, customers and drafts are kept only in this browser's storage, and the PDF is made on your phone or computer. Clear your browser data to remove them.
