Consequences of paying salaries late

Cash is tight and salaries will be 10 days late. What risk do we run?

The situation

WPS reports late and missing wages to the Ministry of Labour, which can take action against the employer.

The law

  • Wage Protection System (Ministry of Labour): Wages paid through banks via WPS so the Ministry can check timely payment
  • Labour Law No. 14 of 2004: Main private sector employment law

What it means for you

The Ministry can suspend services such as new work permits for employers who pay late. Workers can also file complaints. If a delay is unavoidable, tell staff in writing, pay as much as possible on time, and clear the balance quickly. Avoid repeat delays, as patterns get flagged.

What to do

  1. Tell staff in writing about the delay.
  2. Pay partial salaries if possible.
  3. Clear the balance quickly.
  4. Fix the cash flow cause.

We can do this for youPayroll set-up and monthly run through the Wage Protection System (WPS): QAR 600
