Setting up WPS for the first employee

We just hired our first employee. How do we get on the Wage Protection System?

The situation

Private sector wages in Qatar are paid through banks under WPS, which sends salary data to the Ministry of Labour.

The law

  • Wage Protection System (Ministry of Labour): Wages paid through banks via WPS so the Ministry can check timely payment
  • Ministry of Interior Establishment ID service: Company immigration record needed before visas and residence permits; needs a valid CR and licence

What it means for you

Open a company bank account, ask the bank to register you for WPS using your establishment ID, and collect the employee's QID and IBAN. Each month you upload a salary file and the bank pays and reports it. Starting with WPS from day one avoids a later clean up when the Ministry spots off-system payments.

What to do

  1. Open a company account with a WPS bank.
  2. Register for WPS with your establishment ID.
  3. Collect QID and IBAN for the employee.
  4. Upload the first salary file before payday.
