Should I register under my own name or a brand name?

The situation

SSM allows registration in your personal name as on your MyKad or in a trade name. The yearly fee differs between the two.

The law

  • Sec 5, Registration of Businesses Act 1956: Business must be registered with SSM before or within 30 days of starting

What it means for you

A trade name helps branding and online stores, but it costs more and must pass a name check. A personal name is simpler and cheaper. Either way, you are personally liable for business debts. Check the current fee on the SSM table before you choose.
