If you verify after 30 days, the date of verification is treated as the date of filing. If that date is after the due date, the return becomes belated and the late fee applies.

Provisions

CBDT Notification No. 2 of 2024; Sec 234F, Income-tax Act 1961 (now Sec 428)

Analysis

A return uploaded on 25 July 2026 but verified on 10 October 2026 counts as filed on 10 October, so ₹1,000 or ₹5,000 fee and new regime rules for belated returns can apply. Verify as soon as possible. If there was a genuine reason, a condonation request can be made on the portal, but it is not automatic.
