You need the broker's capital gains statement, the mutual fund capital gains statement, and AIS to cross check. For property, keep the sale and purchase deeds, stamp duty value and cost of improvement bills. Form 16 and bank interest certificates cover other income.

Provisions

Sec 48 (now Sec 72); Sec 112A (now Sec 198); Sec 50C (now Sec 78)

Analysis

Capital gain is sale value less cost and expenses under Sec 48 (now Sec 72), so you need both sides of every transaction. For shares bought before 1 February 2018, keep the 31 January 2018 price for grandfathering. For property, Sec 50C (now Sec 78) needs the stamp duty value. Reinvestment proofs are needed for any exemption under Sec 54, 54F or 54EC.
