GST rates were rationalised from 22 September 2025 into main slabs of 5 and 18 percent, with 40 percent for a few goods. Many items moved from 12 or 28 percent. The CBIC site publishes rate notifications and a rate finder.

Provisions

CGST rate notifications effective 22 September 2025; Sec 9, CGST Act 2017

Analysis

If an item that moved from 12 to 5 percent is still billed at 12 percent, you are overpaying. Look up the item on the CBIC rate pages. Exact rates depend on HSN and description, so for borderline items ask the seller to show the HSN.
