Refund after deregistration

We deregistered from VAT but had a credit left. Can we still get it back?

The situation

A credit can be refunded as part of deregistration, after the final return. The FTA will first offset it against any tax or penalties due.

The law

  • Art 74, Federal Decree-Law 8 of 2017 as amended from 1 January 2026: Refund of excess recoverable tax; carry forward or refund only within 5 years

What it means for you

Example: a company closing its business files a final return showing a AED 8,000 credit. The FTA offsets an AED 1,000 penalty and refunds AED 7,000. Keep the bank account open until the refund arrives, or liquidation may be delayed.

What to do

  1. File the final return.
  2. Request the refund.
  3. Keep the bank account open.
  4. Close the account after the refund is received.

We can do this for youVAT refunds: excess input VAT refund, 5-year limit, new residence refund for nationals and tourist refund context: AED 2,500
