Answer in brief

Your AIS is the department's list of what it thinks you earned and spent. If it shows a sale you never made, interest twice, or someone else's income, we file feedback on the portal so the record is corrected and your return does not trigger a mismatch notice.

Every paid answer is checked by a CA. Free AI answers are labelled until a CA verifies them.

What the law says, and what trips people up

From the official portal's manuals and FAQs, with the source for each point.

  • Form 26AS (now Form 168; from AY 2023-24)

Form 168 (old Form 26AS) on TRACES shows only TDS and TCS; other information is in AISSource

What trips people up

  • Same interest or dividend reported twice

Mark 'Information is duplicate / included in other information'Source

  • Transaction belongs to a family member or another year

Mark 'Information relates to other PAN/Year' and give the detailsSource

  • Exempt receipts shown as income

Use the customised option such as 'Income is not taxable'Source

  • Expecting AIS to list everything

AIS holds only what the department has; report all income in the ITR anywaySource

  • Feedback given but TIS not changed

Some feedback goes to the source for confirmation; track response in feedback historySource
