NPS Vatsalya allows parents to open an NPS account in a minor child's name, investing in the child's retirement from birth. Launched September 2024.

Provisions

PFRDA | NPS Vatsalya Guidelines 2024 | IT Act, Sec 124 (old 80CCD)

Analysis

How it works: Parent opens account (PAN of parent + birth certificate of child). Minimum ₹1,000/year. Market-linked returns (equities and debt). When child turns 18: account auto-converts to regular NPS. At 60: pension. Tax benefit for parents: Contributions qualify for 80CCD(1B), the additional ₹50,000 deduction over the ₹1.5L Sec 123, Income-tax Act 2025 (old Sec 80C) limit. This is a significant benefit, ₹50,000 contribution saves ₹10,400 in tax (at 20.8% effective rate) or ₹15,600 (at 30%). Power of early start: ₹1,000/month from birth to age 18 (₹2.16L invested) at 10% returns = ₹6.5L at 18, then continues compounding to retirement.
