Non-filing message even though the return was filed

Find

The most common reason is that the return was uploaded but never e-verified, so it is treated as not filed. Another reason is filing under a different PAN or for the wrong assessment year.

Provisions

Sec 139(1), Income-tax Act 1961 (now Sec 263(1), Income-tax Act 2025); e-Filing portal, Compliance Portal (e-Campaign)

Analysis

Check View Filed Returns for the status. If it shows pending verification and more than 30 days have passed, the return is treated as not filed unless you verify with a condonation request. If the return was filed for the wrong year, you may need to file for the right year now. Once fixed, respond on the Compliance Portal with the acknowledgement number.

Close

  1. Open View Filed Returns and check the status and year.
  2. If not verified, e-verify now and request condonation if late.
  3. If wrong year, file for the correct year.
  4. Respond on the Compliance Portal with the acknowledgement number.
