Checking whether a proposed adjustment notice is genuine

Updated . Every paid answer is checked by a CA. Free AI answers are labelled until a CA verifies them.

Find

Genuine proposed adjustments are visible in your e-Filing account under e-Proceedings. Official notices carry a Document Identification Number (DIN) that can be checked on the portal. The department does not ask you to pay through links in SMS or WhatsApp.

Provisions

CBDT Circular 19/2019 (DIN on every communication); Sec 143(1)(a) (now Sec 270(2))

Analysis

CBDT Circular 19/2019 requires every communication to carry a DIN, and the portal's Authenticate Notice/Order issued by ITD service lets you verify it. Log in directly by typing incometax.gov.in instead of clicking links. If the notice is not in your e-Proceedings and the DIN does not verify, treat it as a scam and report it. Never share OTPs or pay to personal accounts.

Close

  1. Type incometax.gov.in yourself and log in.
  2. Check Pending Actions, e-Proceedings for the notice.
  3. Use Authenticate Notice/Order with the DIN.
  4. Report fake messages through the portal's grievance or cyber crime channels.
